Are you wondering what to expect from your spider vein and varicose vein treatment? Our vein doc in the Hamptons describes the 5-step vein treatment process in Long Island.

Below, we provide a step-by-step overview of our minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatment process.

Step 1: An initial consultation to understand your symptoms and diagnose the root cause of vein problems

Your vein treatment journey starts with an initial consultation with the vein doctor. The vein doctor will examine your leg veins to determine if you have spider veins, varicose veins, and other signs of vein disease. The vein doctor will also ask about your symptoms β€” leg heaviness, leg swelling, leg pain, restless leg syndrome, frequent leg cramps, and throbbing leg veins are common signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, particularly if they worsen at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting or standing still. The vein doctor will also review your medical history to determine if you have risk factors for vein disease.

The primary goal during the initial consultation is determining the possibility ofΒ chronic venous insufficiency, the root cause of all vein problems. Venous insufficiency is a circulatory disorder wherein the collapse of vein valves makes blood flow backward in your leg veins, eventually leading to the accumulation of blood in leg veins. The continued accumulation of blood in leg veins leads to vascular dilation, poor blood circulation, and numerous vein problems, such as spider veins and varicose veins. Diagnosing vein disease is essential for optimal vein treatments β€” removing spider veins without addressing the root cause would cause an inevitable relapse.

After determining the likelihood of chronic venous insufficiency, the vein doctor confirms his findings using ultrasound diagnostic tests, such as duplex ultrasound. During the duplex ultrasound scan, the vein doctor will channel ultrasound energy into your legs to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins, which will reveal if you have chronic venous insufficiency. Besides helping the vein doctor curate the appropriate vein treatment plan, ultrasound results can also support your insurance claims.

Step 2: Curating a personalized vein treatment plan for your symptoms and goals, in collaboration with other vein doctors

After diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency, the vein doctor will curate a personalized vein treatment plan. The vein treatment plan is based on numerous factors, including the location and size of your spider veins and varicose veins, whether you have chronic venous insufficiency, your unique symptoms, medical history, insurance coverage options, and other factors. The vein doctor will highlight all of your options, giving you all the information necessary to make an informed decision. As such, all vein treatment plans are uniquely designed according to the patient’s individual goals and requirements.

Step 3: Primary vein treatments for chronic venous insufficiency β€” radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, and venaseal

If you have chronic venous insufficiency, your vein treatment will start with radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or venaseal. During these procedures, the vein doctor will use thermal energy (radiofrequency ablation), laser energy (endovenous laser ablation), or medical adhesives (venaseal) to destroy or seal the diseased vein’s walls. The accumulated blood will automatically reroute into healthier leg veins, thus restoring optimal blood circulation to the heart. The minimally invasive vein treatment will address the root cause of your vein problems, but it won’t necessarily remove the superficial varicose veins and spider veins.

Step 4: Cosmetic vein treatments for superficial varicose veins and spider veins β€” ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy

After the primary vein treatment, the vein doctor will perform the cosmetic treatment for superficial varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy is the best treatment for spider veins β€” it involves injecting sclerosant medicine into the spider veins to make them shrink and fade away from the skin’s surface. Ambulatory phlebectomy involves the physical extraction of unwanted superficial varicose veins through small incisions on the skin’s surface.

Step 5: A discussion of your post-treatment recovery guidelines and aftercare

After your minimally invasive vein treatment, the vein doctor will discuss your post-treatment recovery guidelines. You have to wear compression stockings for a few weeks, walk frequently, and avoid strenuous workouts for a few days. However, you can resume most of your daily activities and work immediately after your vein treatment β€” there’s no downtime or harsh side effects.
