Dr. Koo’s vein diagnosis and treatment process

Dr. Koo maintains unanimous 5-star reviews because of a comprehensive and personalized vein treatment approach. Most vein doctors treat spider veins and varicose veins without diagnosing and treating the root cause — chronic venous insufficiency. However, most vein problems are symptomatic of venous insufficiency, a circulatory disorder wherein your vein valves collapse and blood flow backward to accumulate in the leg veins. Until the underlying vein disease is treated, the spider veins and varicose veins will keep returning. Dr. Koo’s vein treatment process ensures long-lasting results.

Step 1: Diagnosis

Dr. Koo’s spider vein and varicose vein treatment process starts with a physical examination. She carefully examines your spider veins and varicose veins and asks about your symptoms to determine the likelihood of chronic venous insufficiency. After the physical examination, she administers an ultrasound scan test to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins. Vascular imaging allows the vein specialist to diagnose chronic venous insufficiency, which can also support your insurance coverage claim.

Step 2: Treatment Plan

After diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency, the vein specialist curates a personalized vein treatment plan according to your specific goals and requirements. The vein doctor discusses all your vein treatment options, including their pros, cons, costs, insurance coverage options, and risks. This allows you to select the appropriate vein treatment plan after receiving all the relevant information. The vein doctor also recommends the ideal vein treatment plan based on your medical history, goals, symptoms, diagnostic results, and other factors.

Step 3: Primary Treatment

If you have chronic venous insufficiency, the vein doctor may start your vein treatment with radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or venaseal.

  • Radiofrequency Ablation: The vein doctor makes a small incision on the skin’s surface to insert a catheter into the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance. The catheter generates thermal energy to collapse the diseased vein, rerouting the accumulated blood into healthier leg veins.
  • Endovenous Laser Ablation: The vein specialist makes a small incision on the skin’s surface to insert a laser fiber into the problematic vein under ultrasound guidance. The laser fiber, when activated, generates laser energy to destroy the affected vein, restoring effective blood circulation to the heart.
  • VenaSeal: The vein physician injects a medical-grade adhesive into the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance. The vein glue seals the diseased vein’s walls, turning them into hardened tissues eventually metabolized by the body. The accumulated blood reroutes into healthier leg veins to restore optimal blood circulation.

Step 4: Cosmetic Treatment

If you don’t have chronic venous insufficiency, or once it has been treated, the vein doctor may recommend ambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy to remove the superficial varicose veins and spider veins.

  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy: The vein doctor makes small incisions on the skin’s surface to physically extract the superficial varicose veins. The incision marks gradually heal and fade away from your skin’s surface.
  • Sclerotherapy: The vein physician injects a sclerosant medicine to fuse the spider veins’ walls. The spider veins turn into scar tissues eventually metabolized by the body. The accumulated blood reroutes into healthier leg veins.

Step 5: Recovery & Aftercare

After the entire diagnosis and treatment process, the vein specialist will walk you through the entire recovery process. Minimally invasive procedures are painless and involve minimal side effects, but you may experience mild redness, swelling, and tenderness for a few days. You should wear compression stockings for a few weeks and avoid strenuous workouts for a few days. You can resume your daily activities and work immediately after the vein treatment.
