When do I need to visit a vein clinic? A top vein doctor answers.

harvard trained vein doctors | voted #1 vein center | spider and varicose vein treatment center

Visible veins – like varicose veins and spider veins, are not just visually unappealing – they can also be a sign that you have a serious problem with blood flow in your legs. So when exactly must you visit a vein doctor to get it sorted? We give you the commonest signs.

Top reason to visit a vein doctor: When you feel varicose vein pain in your groin or upper thigh.

Pain due to varicose veins can take on a number of forms. You may have vague, non-specific aches in your lower limbs. Or you could have throbbing pain along the course of your veins. You may also develop painful leg cramps that make you want to move your legs about – this is called ‘restless legs syndrome’. And, be aware, you may not just have varicose veins in your legs and thighs. Pain in the groin signals that you may have varicose veins in the pelvic region. This is especially common in women who have had more than one child.

Why do you have pain at all? Varicose veins develop when you have an underlying problem with blood circulation, called chronic venous insufficiency. In chronic venous insufficiency, the veins in your legs and upper thigh, that transport blood back to the heart, become defective. They no longer transport blood effectively, and blood is retained in the veins, causing the veins walls to expand and bulge out. This can result in throbbing pain, and heaviness in the legs. The impure collected blood can also degrade, and release toxins that cause painful leg cramps.

Your symptoms may not stop with pain. The toxins that build up prevent your skin from getting essential nutrients. This can impair wound healing, and you can develop painful varicose ulcers.

Visit a vein doctor: When you do not know how to soothe varicose vein pain with just lifestyle changes!

Yes, varicose vein pain can be brought down by lifestyle changes, and you may have tried them all. Regular exercise, like walking, can improve blood flow in your legs and push it back to the heart. Keeping your legs elevated for some time each day, and wearing compression stockings could also ease symptoms. But, at some point, all this just does not work anymore, and you will need to see a vein specialist!

So, how to get rid of varicose veins? Earlier, varicose vein removal involved an invasive surgical procedure called vein stripping. Today, however, your vein doctor will suggest several treatment options, which do not include varicose vein surgery at all! Today, varicose veins treatment involves the use of ‘minimally invasive’ procedures – these are actually comparable to standard dental procedures! They do not require hospital admissions, or prolonged recovery time. You can pop in for an hour, get your veins fixed, and get right back to your work and normal lifestyle.

The common options offered at a minimally invasive varicose veins treatments center include:

  • Radiofrequency ablation: The vascular doctor will numb your skin, and make a small incision. A catheter is inserted into your defective vein. Through the catheter, radiofrequency waves are delivered into the vein, which heat up the vein from within. This causes the vein walls to melt and stick together.
  • Endovenous laser ablation: This is almost exactly the same as radiofrequency ablation, but slightly more uncomfortable. It uses laser energy instead of radiofrequency waves, which have greater intensity.
  • VenaSeal: This is a new technique that eliminates the anesthetic injection. Medical grade glue is directly injected into your vein. When the glue hardens, the vein is sealed off.
  • ClariVein: This is another advanced method, which uses a medicated solution called sclerosant. Sclerosant makes the vein walls sticky, and causes them to adhere and seal off. A tiny catheter, with a rotating head is implanted into the vein. This catheter disperses sclerosant throughout the vein length, in all directions.
  • Sclerotherapy and Varithena: These methods also use sclerosant, but the solution is directly injected into the vein. Varithena is used for medium sized veins that remain after the above procedures are completed. It uses foam based sclerosant, which helps the solution to spread through the vein. Sclerotherapy uses liquid sclerosant, which spreads only to a limited distance. It is used for really tiny veins, like visible spider veins.
Visible veins like varicose and spider veins may or may not reflect underlying vein disease. Find out exactly when you need to seek treatment from a vein doctor.
