Things to know before choosing a vein dr near you in Chicago?

A top medical center explains about vein diseases and treatments, and tells you how to choose a vein dr near you in Chicago.

When you have varicose veins

Varicose veins are large veins that bulge out from the surface of your skin. They can be greenish, bluish or dark purple and often have a twisted or knotted appearance. These veins are stretched, and often feel uncomfortable, especially if you bump them against something. Varicose veins usually form when you have a problem with the main superficial veins on your legs – a condition called chronic venous insufficiency. A doctor at a reputed vein clinic should be able to diagnose this.

When you have chronic venous insufficiency

So what is CVS? Chronic venous insufficiency, or CVS, is a disease of the large superficial veins of your legs, called the saphenous veins. These veins have one-way doors, called valves, which help carry blood back to the heart against gravity. When blood flows past, the valves shut, preventing back-flow of blood. In CVS, however, these valves malfunction and become leaky. As a result, blood leaks down into your legs and starts to collect there, putting excess pressure on the smaller veins in your legs and causing them to bulge out. This is what actually causes varicose veins to form.

You can develop several painful symptoms due to CVS, which you may not realize, and put down to ageing. These include throbbing pain in your legs, heaviness in your feet, and swollen ankles. Fatigue is also common.

When you have spider veins

Wait… really? Most people don’t even consider spider veins a real problem. They’re just tiny blemishes on your legs, and are more cosmetically annoying than anything else… right?

Turns out, that may not really be the case. If these spider veins are on your legs, there’s a good chance that they are forming because of chronic venous insufficiency. In fact, a cluster of spider veins located on the inside of your ankle is probably indicative of advanced vein disease. So even if your problem with those purplish or bluish blemishes is merely the appearance, you should see a vein doctor to evaluate whether or not you have underlying venous insufficiency.

Okay, so I need to find a vein dr near me in Chicago… what happens next?

Once you decide you need to see a vein doctor, it is natural to wonder what will happen next. At your initial appointment, the nurse or doctor will probably record your medical history, and evaluate your current symptoms. The vein doctor will examine your leg veins to determine what kind of vein disease you have.

You will probably need a duplex ultrasound

This is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the vein doctor to evaluate blood flow within your veins. The vein doctor will be able to find if you have significant blood trickling in the wrong direction, and will be able to ‘back-track’ your varicose veins to find out which of the larger saphenous veins has defective valves. This is important to pan the right sort of treatment for you.

The vein doctor will put together a tailored treatment plan, just for you.

Based on your history and duplex ultrasound, the vein doctor will put together a customized treatment plan for you. If you have CVS, you will need treatment to shut down the defective saphenous veins. This is done using minimally invasive treatment procedures. These procedures aim at sealing off the defective vein from within. Since the blood can no longer flow through the sealed vein, it finds an alternate route to the heart through deeper, healthier veins. Once blood stops flowing through the vein, it becomes defunct, shrinks, and disappears over a period of time.

Some minimally invasive treatment procedures that your vein doctor may suggest include:

  • Radiofrequency ablation: Heat delivered into your vein using a catheter seals it off from within
  • Endovenous laser ablation: Laser energy is delivered through a catheter to seal off the vein.
  • VenaSeal: Medicated glue, injected directly into your vein blocks it up.
  • ClariVein: A tiny, rotating catheter is implanted into the vein. This catheter disperses a medicated solution (sclerosant) throughout the vein.
  • Varithena: Foam based sclerosant is used, which automatically disperses throughout the vein. used for medium sized veins.
  • Sclerotherapy: Used to seal off spider veins. Sclerosant is directly injected into the vein.
