FAQs
What are varicose veins and spider veins?
Spider veins are dense clusters of blood vessels visible just underneath the skin’s surface; they look like spider webs crawling up the legs. Varicose veins are thick masses of blood vessels that protrude out of the skin’s surface in a twisted, tangled, and knotted form. Spider veins and varicose veins are essentially damaged veins with excessive, accumulated blood, a consequence of chronic venous insufficiency.
Chronic venous insufficiency is the root cause of most vein problems, including spider veins and varicose veins. Healthy veins contain vein valves that ensure one-way blood circulation to the heart, often against the force of gravity. When your vein valves collapse, blood flows backward due to gravity and accumulates in the leg veins, eventually leading to vascular dilation and the formation of varicose veins and spider veins.
What vein problems should I look for?
Spider veins are the earliest indications of chronic venous insufficiency. However, most patients don’t notice other warning signs of vein disease because they seem benign and harmless, at least initially. You should look for the following vein problems — leg heaviness, frequent leg cramps, restless leg syndrome, leg pain, and leg swelling. If left untreated, you may eventually experience skin discoloration, leg ulcers, skin disease, and deep vein thrombosis.
What are the best minimally invasive varicose vein treatments?
The best minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments include sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, and venaseal. Your vein doctor will examine your leg veins, run advanced vascular imaging tests, and determine if you have vein disease before curating a treatment plan. If you have vein disease, they’ll address the root cause before removing varicose veins and spider veins.
