The best vein treatment in NYC for varicose veins: VenaSeal

This is a minimally invasive technique which, quite literally, uses glue to seal off the defective varicose vein. The vein doctor uses ultrasound within the vein clinic, to view the defective vein beneath the skin. Under ultrasound guidance, the vein doctor then inserts a flexible catheter into the vein. Small drops of VenaSeal glue – a medical grade adhesive – are placed throughout the length of the vein. The vein doctor then applies pressure from the outside (to help keep the veins shut while the glue hardens), and simultaneously withdraws the catheter. You may need a small bandage at the site where the catheter entered, but no other major dressings!

Of all the minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, VenaSealvein closure has emerged as one of the top techniques performed at vein clinics. There are several reasons why VenaSeal is superior to other treatment options for varicose veins:

  • Unlike other procedures, it can be done without a prior numbing injection. Not only do you avoid the additional prick, you also avoid the uncomfortable sensation of your skin getting stretched out under the anesthesia!
  • Once the glue hardens, no further healing process is required. So, after the procedure, you will not have much pain, swelling or bruising.
  • With other procedures, you need to wear compression stockings for a couple of weeks at the minimum, to ensure that the vein stays shut during the healing process. However, this can be avoided with VenaSeal.
Minimally invasive treatment has proven effective for varicose and spider veins. But what is the best among these techniques? This article shares some insights.

Are there any disadvantages to VenaSeal?

The main drawbacks of VenaSeal are due to the fact that it is a fairly recent procedure. It may not be offered at several vein clinics, either because the vein center lacks the proper resources needed for the procedure, or because vein specialists are not adequately skilled in performing this particular technique. The other drawback is that, because it has been introduced fairly recently, there is not much evidence of its long-term efficacy. Therefore, some insurance plans may not cover the cost of VenaSeal treatment – which could run to thousands of dollars.

What is the most feasible alternative to VenaSeal?

The most tried and tested alternative to VenaSeal is radiofrequency ablation. The procedure is quite similar, but needs a prior numbing injection. When a catheter is inserted into the defective vein, instead of glue, radiofrequency waves are sent into the vein. This delivers heat to the vein walls, which respond by ‘melting’, and sticking together. Over time, the vein walls will scar and seal off the vein. Some varicose vein treatment centers also offer endovenous laser ablation, which uses laser energy instead of radiofrequency waves to generate heat.

The best vein treatment in NYC for spider veins: sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy has, over the years, proven to be the best form of treatment for spider veins. This technique involves a simple injection, that can be done under direct vision, using really tiny needles. The injection delivers a medicated solution called sclerosant into your veins, which causes the vein walls to swell and stick together. Over time, the sealed vein shrinks and disappears altogether.

What are the disadvantages of sclerotherapy?

Sclerosant is a mild irritant, and while it is perfectly safe to use on your legs and hands, it may not be a good idea to use in delicate areas such as the face. In these areas, your vein physician may prefer to offer non-invasive laser treatment. In this, the laser light is beamed onto the skin over the spider veins. The laser penetrates the skin and causes the veins t shrink. However, this is a much milder form of treatment, and you may require at least three to four sessions to achieve the same results as a single round of sclerotherapy.
