What Happens When You Seek Vein Treatment at a Leading Varicose Vein Clinic in Texas? A Renowned Vein Doctor Explains.
Varicose veins can be a source of great pain and anxiety; yet, it is understandable to be apprehensive about a visit to your vein doctor. In this article, let us tell you exactly what to expect when you schedule a visit to your vein doctor – the more you know about the process, the less nervous you will be!
At your initial visit, the vein doctor consults with you and assesses for underlying vein disease
At your first visit for varicose veins, your vein doctor will aim to get to know, in order to assess what exactly your medical problem is, and what kind of vein treatment would suit you the best. Your doctor will probably ask you a lot of questions, regarding your medical history, your current health problems, and what your treatment expectations are. Feel free to ask some questions in return! For instance, you would probably want to know what exactly is wrong with your veins, and what kind of treatment can best help you.
Your vein doctor will, of course, also examine your leg veins in detail. Apart from physically looking at them, they may also order a duplex ultrasound. This will allow them to examine the pattern of blood flow in your leg vein, and help them detect the primary defective vein, which has been responsible for the formation of your varicose veins. This is an important step, as the primary vein will need to be addressed first in your treatment strategy.
You receive a personalized treatment plan that addresses all your problematic veins
Based on the results of your clinical examination and vein ultrasound, your vein doctor will put together a personalized treatment plan for you. The treatment plan will take into account a number of factors, including the following:
- The number and size of primary veins that are defective
- The number of varicose veins that you have
- Your past medical history
- Your personal preferences and insurance plan
- Whether or not you want spider vein treatments in addition to your varicose vein treatment
Once you are armed with your treatment plan, you can schedule an appointment for your treatment session!
At your first treatment visit, the key problematic vein is addressed.
When you begin your varicose vein treatment, the largest defective vein will be addressed first. This is usually the saphenous vein, which begins in your thigh – so do not be surprised if the doctor treats this part of your leg, even if the visible varicose veins are in the lower legs. Closing off the large saphenous veins effectively prevents varicose veins and spider veins from forming again. The saphenous veins are usually shut down using one following techniques:
- Radiofrequency ablation: This uses heat from radiofrequency veins to seal off the vein.
- Endovenous ablation: Heat from laser energy is used to seal off the vein.
- VenaSeal: A cutting edge technique which uses superglue to seal off the vein.
After this visit, you need minimal postoperative care.
Minimally invasive procedures are safe and effective procedures which do not need prolonged recovery times – you can get back to your normal routine immediately after the procedure. However, you may experience a small amount of pain and swelling – this can easily be dealt with the painkillers that your vein physician gives you. You will also need to wear compression stockings for two to three weeks after the procedure. This helps the veins stay shut during the healing period, and minimizes swelling.
Subsequent visits will address any residual visible veins that you have.
After your main saphenous veins are shut down, the swelling in your varicose veins will considerably reduce and you will have relief from painful symptoms. However, the injured veins do not disappear altogether, and you may need an additional session to shut down the smaller varicose veins and spider veins. This is achieved by one of the following techniques:
- Sclerotherapy: This is used to treat tiny spider veins. A medicated liquid, called sclerosant, is injected directly into the veins. The liquid makes the vein walls sticky and allows them to adhere together, sealing off the vein.
- Varithena: This technique uses a foam based sclerosant, which can spread out to a wider area. This technique is therefore reserved for larger spider veins and residual varicose veins.
