How do I look for the best vein clinic in Houston? A top medical center offers some tips.

The best vein clinic in Houston would screen you for underlying vein disease.
When you visit a vein Clinic in Houston, it is probably because you are concerned about varicose veins or spider veins. Perhaps you have painful symptoms, like throbbing pain, swollen feet and ankles, or heavy feet and leg cramps. Or maybe you don’t have pain at all, but merely wish to get rid of these veins for cosmetic reasons. Whatever the case, a good vein clinic should offer you screening for underlying vein disease, which is usually done through a duplex ultrasound.
But is this really necessary? Many patients are wary of unnecessary tests and screening, and understandably so. However, in this instance, it is probably the right thing to do. Research shows that varicose veins and spider veins do not usually pop up on their own – they develop secondary to a more complex vein condition, called chronic venous insufficiency (CVS). CVS is a disease that affects large, superficial veins of your leg, called the saphenous veins. These veins have a tough job – they need to carry blood from the legs back to the heart, against gravity. To help with this, the saphenous veins have tiny one-way doors called ‘valves’ within them. Once blood flows past, the valves seal tightly shut, so the blood cannot fall back down into the legs.
In CVS, it is these valves which are diseases, and they do not provide a proper seal against blood. Therefore, blood trickles down into the legs, and begins to accumulate there. This causes the pressure in the smaller leg veins to build up, and they can distort and bulge out, leading to the formation of varicose veins. Eve small veins can get damaged under pressure, an they form blue or purple streaks under the skin, called spider veins. If you just treat the varicose and spider veins, the pressure in the legs won’t go away, and new ones will form. For complete treatment, you must address the root of the problem – CVS.
The best vein clinic in Houston would offer minimally invasive treatment options
Spider veins and varicose veins are no longer treated by physically removing them. Instead, ‘minimally invasive’ procedures are used, which merely involve a pinpoint entry into your skin. These procedures treat the diseased vein from within, which is just as effective as actually removing the vein.
Minimally invasive treatment options for CVS:
When you have CVS, the vein doctor usually seals off the main saphenous vein. When this happens, the blood gets re-routed to healthier veins, and the pressure in the smaller leg veins reduces.
- Radiofrequency ablation: The vein doctor numbs the skin over the defective vein. A small catheter is inserted through the skin, into the vein. Through the catheter, radiofrequency waves are sent into the vein which generate heat. This causes the vein walls to ‘melt’. The raw vein walls stick together, and scar over time, sealing off the vein.
- Endovenous ablation: This also seals off the vein using heat, but the source is laser energy rather than radiofrequency waves. Although this might seem like an advanced option, most vein doctors do not prefer it because it can cause more discomfort during the procedure.
- VenaSeal: This is an advanced procedure which does not even require a numbing injection. The vein specialist injects medical grade glue directly into the saphenous vein. The glue hardens instantly, sealing off the vein.
- Clarivein: This also usually does not require skin numbing. A catheter is inserted into the vein. It has a rotating head, through which a medicated solution called sclerosant is dispersed throughout the vein. The sclerosant irritates the vein walls, and they swell and adhere together.
Minimally invasive treatment options for residual varicose and spider veins:
Once the main saphenous vein is treated, you will no longer have painful symptoms. The smaller, visible varicose veins and spider veins can be sealed off for cosmetic purposes, using one of the following methods:
- Sclerotherapy: This is only used for tiny spider veins. Since the veins are really small, a direct injection of the sclerosant is more than sufficient to seal off the vein.
- Varithena: This is used for medium sized veins. Like sclerotherapy, this is also a direct injection; however, the sclerosant is foam based, which allows it to spread out to a wider area.
