Planning to Visit a Dr for Varicose Veins? A Top Vascular Surgeon Shares Some Information before Your Consultation

April 30, 2020

spider and varicose vein treatment center

Varicose veins can’t be fun to live with. Apart from their unpleasant appearance, they can also cause leg pain and fatigue, which will only go away permanently if treated at a vein clinic. However, there are four things you should know before you visit a vein doctor.

Your Dr for Varicose Veins will always Screen You for Underlying Vein Disease.

At your first consultation at a vein center, the vein doctor will naturally want to examine the veins that are your main concern. But once your vein specialist takes a look at the varicose veins, he/she will always want to screen for an underlying vein condition called venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is what causes varicose veins in the first place. This condition actually affects the larger veins of the leg, called the saphenous veins, which are responsible for transporting blood from the smaller leg veins back to the heart. When the saphenous veins develop insufficiency, blood does not flow to the heart efficiently. Instead, it flows in the wrong direction, causing blood to back up and accumulate in the smaller leg veins. The vein walls of these smaller veins expand, and bulge beneath the surface of the skin, as varicose veins. The same condition is what causes spider veins – tiny veins can get damaged because of the pressure of excess blood, and they become visible beneath the skin as purple streaks.

Your Vein Doctor will Probably Address Large Veins in the Legs First before Moving on to Your Visible Veins.

Even though you are going in for varicose veins treatment, if you have venous insufficiency, your vein doctor’s first priority will be to address the large veins of your leg. You see, if the vein doctor merely fixes your varicose veins, the blood that keeps backing up from the main veins will create more varicose veins eventually. The only permanent solution is to seal the largest vein that is defective – and that means the saphenous veins. Once these veins have been blocked off, the blood reroutes itself to deeper, healthier veins. No more backed up blood – which relieves the pressure and swelling in your varicose veins! After this treatment, if there are residual visible veins, they can be treated separately.

The Best Varicose Vein Doctor will use Minimally Invasive Procedures to Treat Your Varicose Veins.

Earlier, vascular surgeons treated defective veins by cutting them out, through a painful process called vein stripping. Today, however, invasive varicose vein surgery is very rare. Vein doctors today practice minimally invasive vein treatment, where the saphenous vein is sealed off from within. Eventually, the treated varicose veins will eventually disappear and will no longer be visible.

Varicose and Spider Veins | Vein Diseases

Tried and tested minimally invasive procedures use heat delivered through a catheter to seal the vein from within. Radiofrequency ablation, the most preferred technique, uses heat generated from radiofrequency waves. Endovenous laser ablation uses laser energy to generate heat, but this may be more uncomfortable because of the intensity of laser energy.

VenaSeal is a new, cutting edge procedure used to treat varicose veins. Here, medical grade glue is merely injected into the defective vein. The glue hardens in a few minutes and effectively blocks up the vein.

Spider vein removal is achieved through a procedure called sclerotherapy. This technique uses a medicated solution called sclerosant, which is injected into the veins. Sclerosant makes the vein walls sticky, and they adhere to each other, cutting off blood flow. Sclerotherapy can also be adapted for larger veins, by delivering the solution through a special catheter. The ClariVein catheter has a rotating head, which helps disperse the solution evenly throughout the vein.

Depending on Your Symptoms and Type of Treatment that You Require, You may be Eligible for Insurance Coverage.

In general, if you have experienced symptoms of vein disease, you might be eligible for insurance coverage. These symptoms include varicose vein pain, general leg pain and cramping, and swelling in your feet and ankles, especially after standing for long periods. So, be sure to report all symptoms of vein disease to your vein doctor. The insurance carrier may also require specific proof of vein disease, such as the ultrasound report that demonstrates defective blood flow in your veins.

If your main complaint is spider veins, however, the treatment would be considered purely cosmetic, and you might not be eligible for insurance coverage unless you have underlying venous insufficiency.

You can save yourself a lot of worry by simply contacting the vein clinic before your initial consultation and sharing the details of your insurance plan. The front desk at most vein centers will be happy to verify your details, free of cost, prior to your appointment. This will ensure that you do not have any unpleasant surprises, either during your consultation, or after your treatment procedure.
