Why Laser Vein Removal Centers May Not be the Answer to Getting Rid of your Spider Veins | A Top Vein Doctor’s Insight

harvard trained vein doctors | voted #1 vein center | spider and varicose vein treatment center

Are laser vein removal centers ideal for treating spider veins?

There are two kinds of laser vein removal centers – certified medical vein clinics, that employ skilled vein specialists, and medical spas, which are more likely to have untrained personnel. Quite apart from the fact that you would be more comfortable with an expert, there are two concrete reasons why you should always get treated by a specialized vein doctor:

  •  Vein specialists can find out if you have underlying vein disease

Spider veins often indicate the presence of a deeper vein problem, called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This is a disorder of inefficient blood circulation in the legs, and, if untreated, can lead to more serious consequences like leg ulcers and poor wound healing. A vein specialist can perform a diagnostic ultrasound to find out if you have this condition.

  • The treatment offered by qualified vein specialists is likely to be more effective and long lasting

If you have CVS, treating spider veins alone is not enough. You need to get the underlying condition treated. Otherwise, the spider veins will just come back again, and may even worsen if as the CVI progresses.

Isn’t laser the best and latest treatment for spider veins?

Laser treatment for spider veins actually has more disadvantages than advantages. The treatment process is extremely long, and it can be several months before you start seeing visible results. Laser vein removal also requires multiple sessions, which means multiple visits to the clinic, as well as an increase in the overall cost of treatment.

So ideally, which procedure is used in the treatment of spider veins?

Sclerotherapyis the most effective spider vein treatment. With ample clinical evidence documenting its efficacy, it is the treatment of choice offered by all vein experts for spider veins on legs. This non-surgical procedure is simple, minimally invasive, and can be done in less than an hour at a vein clinic.

Have you been considering laser treatment for spider veins? This article will tell you why laser vein removal centers may not be the ideal option – and what you should look for instead.

Sclerotherapyconsists of a simple injection, done with really tiny needles that barely cause any discomfort. A medicated solution, known assclerosant, is directly injected, using these needles, into your spider veins. When the sclerosant is injected, you will see that the spider vein disappears immediately. However, this is because the sclerosant pushes the blood out of the veins temporarily, and the vein will reappear again. Over time, the sclerosant irritates the walls of your veins, causing them to become sticky and eventually fuse together. This stops blood from flowing through the spider veins. Over time, the non-functional veins get digested by the body, and disappear completely from view. This process takes around a month. Unlike laser treatment, A single injection of sclerotherapy can lead to almost 80% improvement in the appearance of spider veins.

Since sclerotherapy is a single step process, you don’t require sedation or recovery time. You can arrive at the vein clinic on the day of the procedure, and leave as soon as it is done. You can resume your daily activities immediately. Your vein doctor may ask you to get adequate exercise, in order to improve blood circulation and promote healing. You may also need to wear compression stockings for a few weeks. These ensure that the veins seal off effectively, and they also prevent swelling and bruising. While a single session of sclerotherapy may cost more than laser treatment, it is much more effective, so in the long run, you end up paying much lesser than you would for multiple laser sessions.

Are there any side effects? The worst one is inflammation. The area of skin which was injected may appear slightly raised and reddish, similar to a bug bite. This is due to the irritant action of the sclerosant, and lasts for less than 24 hours. Very, very rarely, the skin over the area of injection may darken. This is not serious and will fade over time.
