A leading vein doctor advises you on how to choose the right spider vein treatment in NJ

Spider veins can cause you a lot of worry – they can take away the beauty of your skin, and can feel uncomfortable. But getting rid of them is not easy – there are so many treatment options to choose from! Read on to find out how to decide which method of treatment is right for you.

Spider vein treatment in NJ: Choose vein treatments based on where the veins are located

The kind of treatment that you choose should depend on the part of your body where the spider veins are located. For most of us, spider veins appear as clusters on our legs. In these cases, there is really only one proven method of treatment – sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment procedure that cures your spider veins from within. The vein doctor injects a medicated solution called sclerosant into your veins (through really really tiny needles – you can barely feel the prick). When you get injected, you can actually see the spider veins disappear and reappear again, as the solution pushes the blood out temporarily. This is a sign that the solution has gone into the right vein.

Over time, the sclerosant acts on the spider vein walls, causing them to fuse to each other and shrivel up. The vein eventually gets digested by the body and disappears. It should take around a month for the spider veins to vanish completely, and usually, a single treatment session is all you need.

Sometimes, however, you may notice spider veins on your face, around your nose or underneath your eyes. Most vein specialists prefer to avoid using sclerosant in these veins, as the veins communicate freely with the brain and eye, and you would not want this potent solution going there. In these cases, vein doctors prefer to use laser light therapy, or blue light therapy. The light is shone onto the skin surface over the veins. Heat energy from the laser light acts directly on the spider veins, causing them to shrink. This is not as effective as sclerotherapy, though, and you may need three to four sessions of laser light therapy, depending on the number of veins, for the veins to disappear completely.

Spider vein treatment in NJ: Stay away from home remedies!

When in doubt, most of us do an online internet search. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. While you do get information on comprehensive treatment options, the internet can also be a source of inaccurate information, especially when it comes to home remedies.

The bottom line is that home remedies are completely ineffective at treating spider veins. Some of the popular remedies suggested online include using products like apple cider vinegar, various essential oils, and witch hazel. The general recommendation is to apply various dilutions of these products on the skin over your spider veins. Now, this simply should not be done, for two important reasons. Firstly, spider veins lie under the skin surface. So anything you apply over the skin surface cannot reach the veins at all, and therefore cannot be effective (unless it can actually penetrate the skin – like laser light). Secondly, it is a good idea to remember that the skin over the spider veins is stretched thin and is delicate, which means that it is more sensitive than normal. Applying potent liquids or oils is likely to cause irritation and burning and can worsen the original problem to the point where you have to wait for the skin to heal before attempting sclerotherapy.

Spider vein treatment in NJ: Do you have underlying vein disease?

One important factor in choosing the right spider vein treatment is to assess if you have underlying vein disease. Spider veins often arise secondary to a more complex condition called chronic venous insufficiency. In this condition, the valves in the main veins of the leg weaken, causing the veins to lose their efficiency. So the blood in the veins, which is supposed to go to the heart, stays in the legs, causing the vein walls to expand, and the pressure in the veins to increase. The excess pressure causes the blood to force its way into tiny new veins – which appear on the surface as spider veins.

Imagine you have a leaky hosepipe, with multiple holes spurting water. You would need to turn off the tap before fixing each of those holes! Similarly, if you have chronic venous insufficiency, you need to fix the main veins before you fix the spider veins. This is done by sealing off the main vein completely from blood flow. Once blocked up, just like the spider veins, the main vein shrinks and gets digested. Some of the most effective methods used to seal off the main veins are:

Radiofrequency ablation: The skin over the main vein is numbed and nicked to expose the vein. A heat-generating catheter is inserted through the nick into the vein. The heat, which is delivered throughout the length of the vein, seals it off.

VenaSeal: This is an advanced technique which involves injecting special, medical grade glue into the main vein. The glue blocks up the vein and seals it off.
