What are spider veins?
Before you seek our spider vein treatment, it would be helpful to understand exactly what spider veins are. Spider veins are basically tiny, unhealthy veins, that lie just beneath the surface of your skin. They can be bluish, reddish, or purplish in appearance, and often interlace together like a spider’s web – hence the name. These veins commonly occur on your legs and thighs, but you may also see them on your arms or face.
Why do you get spider veins? The main cause is a deeper underlying vein condition, called chronic venous insufficiency. This is a condition which affects the large superficial veins of your legs, called the saphenous veins. Since the saphenous veins are damaged, blood from the legs does not return properly back to the heart; instead, it backs up into the smaller veins, causing them to swell and distort. These appear beneath the surface of your skin as spider veins.
How are spider veins treated?
The gold standard for treating spider veins is a technique called sclerotherapy. This is a minimally invasive injection technique, in which a medicated solution is injected into each tiny spider vein individually. The solution irritates the walls lining the veins, causing them to swell and stick together. The spider vein seals off and slowly starts being absorbed by the body. Over the course of a month, you will find that the spider vein lightens and disappears completely from view.
If you have spider veins on delicate areas, such as your face, your vein doctor may avoid sclerotherapy. Instead, you can opt for non-invasive blue light laser treatment. The laser penetrates your skin and generates heat that causes the spider veins to shrink. The results are slower than with sclerotherapy, though, and you may need three to four sessions of laser treatment for the spider veins to completely disappear.
Will I need additional treatment for my spider veins?
If your vein specialist determines that you have chronic venous insufficiency, you will need to get your saphenous vein treated first before proceeding with spider vein treatment. If you choose to only have sclerotherapy done, your spider veins might re-form again. Treating CVS first makes sclerotherapy results permanent. The vein specialist will use one of the following methods to seal the saphenous vein permanently:
- Radiofrequency ablation: This is the most commonly used technique. After a numbing injection, a radiofrequency catheter is inserted into the vein. Heat generated from radiofrequency waves cause the vein walls to melt, and then scar and seal off.
- Endovenous laser vein ablation: Instead of radiofrequency waves, laser energy is used to seal off the vein. This is less preferred by experienced vein specialists, as the intense laser energy can make the procedure uncomfortable.
- VenaSeal: This is the most preferred technique used by vein specialists, as it does not even need a numbing injection. Using a catheter, medicated glue is delivered in drops throughout the vein. The glue instantly hardens and seals off the vein.
- ClariVein: The catheter is equipped with a rotating head. Sclerosing solution is delivered into the vein through the catheter, and the head disperses it in all directions, all along the vein length. As with sclerotherapy, this solution causes the vein walls to become sticky and adhere to each other, sealing off the vein
