Do You Have Chronic Venous Insufficiency? Where Can You Find a Texas Vein Center Medical Clinic for Excellent Care?

spider and varicose vein treatment center

If you have been experiencing aching or tired legs, or are starting to see a lot of veins bulging out of your lower limbs, you probably want to figure out what is going on. Let’s talk about vein centers where you can seek treatment. But in order to understand how something goes wrong, you first have to understand how it is supposed to work normally.

Veins throughout the body have one-way valves that ensure that blood makes its way to the heart but doesn’t flow back out to the limbs. Veins in the legs have to work extra hard because they are fighting the force of gravity to return blood to the heart. When the valves in the veins of the legs become leaky, gravity takes over and blood travels backwards to pool in veins near the feet. When this happens in one vein, it is called venous reflux, but when the blood flows the wrong way in many veins, it is diagnosed as a vein disease called venous insufficiency, because the venous system is no longer able to sufficiently do its job of returning blood back to the heart.

Over time, the pressure in the vein increases due to fluid build-up, which leads to bulging veins. Depending on the size, appearance, location, and level of discomfort, these bulging veins are called spider veins or varicose veins. Spider veins are thin, at less than a millimeter in diameter, and just like their name implies, they look like red, blue, or purple spider webs. Clusters can be found in the legs or on the face, and they are all associated with a slight discomfort. Varicose veins on the other hand will be much bigger, at over three millimeters in diameter, and they tend to look like a knotted rope, with uneven distribution and areas that bulge. Varicose veins are found in the legs, inner thighs, buttocks, and lower pelvic regions. Varicose veins can be asymptomatic or cause significant discomfort.

Varicose and Spider Veins | Vein Diseases

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a relatively common condition that affects 1 in 4 people, and you may start seeing those varicose veins and spider veins that we discussed above. If the vein disease is severe, you might notice some dark red/brown patches or ulcers on your skin. Those skin discolorations are a condition called stasis dermatitis, and the staining comes from red blood cell breakdown. The ulcers, which are typically found on your shin or calf, are usually open wounds that don’t heal very quickly or easily because there is not enough blood flow to send platelets and other clotting factors to the area.

Vein disease can also cause heaviness or aching, especially towards the end of the day, when you have been up and about and more blood has a chance to make its way down to the legs. This also leads to leg fatigue and swelling in the feet or ankles. Your leg muscles might even start cramping because there is insufficient circulation to whisk away the excess lactic acid produced from normal activity.

The varicose veins and spider veins may  itch, burn, or throb, and can be tender to the touch. Many people tend to think that all of these signs and symptoms are just normal experiences with aging, but Chronic Venous Insufficiency can be treated! When you’re asking yourself if you are experiencing these signs and symptoms, think back to what your legs looked and felt like five or ten years ago. Take note if your legs are noticeably more tired or achy at the end of the day than they used to be, and be sure to get in contact with a Texas vein treatment center to find a specialist in venous medicine.

What do I do if I have Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

If you have varicose veins and spider veins, it is extremely important to get screened at a vein clinic for any underlying venous insufficiency. The best way to treat these visible veins you are seeing on your legs is to get to the root of the problem, which is likely a larger circulatory issue such as Chronic Venous Insufficiency. Once you are evaluated and diagnosed by a board-certified specialist in venous medicine, he or she can make recommendations on what kind of varicose vein and spider vein treatment would be best for your individual case, which in most instances is a minimally-invasive procedure to fix the “leaky pipe” and close unhealthy veins to make sure that blood can flow in the right direction and prevent build-up.

As mentioned before, this is an abnormal but treatable condition, so it is important to set up an appointment with a Texas vein center specialist in venous medicine to make sure that the damage to the veins does not lead to any further problems down the road.
