About varicose veins and spider veins: What are they, and how do they form?
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that tend to bulge out beneath the surface of your skin. They can appear on your thighs and lower legs. Spider veins, on the other hand, are reddish, bluish or purplish streaks that lie flat against the skin surface. They appear in clusters, resembling a spider’s web, and hence their name. While spider veins can appear on the face, hands and feet, they are more common on the lower legs and ankles.
Both varicose veins and spider veins usually arise from an underlying vein disorder called chronic venous insufficiency (CVS). CVS is a condition that affects the saphenous veins, which are larger, superficial veins in the leg. The saphenous veins run all across the length of your leg, and transport impure blood from the legs back to the heart. The blood transport occurs against gravity, and to help in this process, these veins have tiny doors called valves within them. When blood flows upwards past the valves, they seal shut, which prevents the blood from trickling back down in the legs.
In CVS, the valves of the saphenous veins wear out and tend to malfunction. Blood is not transported efficiently back to the heart, and as a result, impure blood starts collecting in the leg, and backs up in the smaller veins. Eventually, these smaller veins distort under the pressure of so much excess blood, and they appear outwards as twisted, bulging, varicose veins. Even tinier veins can get damaged and show up on the surface as reddish or bluish streaks – these are spider veins.
Seeking treatment for chronic venous insufficiency
If you do have CVS, you probably have some a lot of symptoms due to the excess blood backed up in your legs. Most of us do not associate these symptoms with vein problems – we attribute it to ‘getting older’. The truth is, however, some of the symptoms below can easily be fixed by treating your varicose veins:
- Throbbing leg pain
- Swollen feet and ankles
- Leg cramps
- Sudden leg fatigue
- Heaviness of legs and feet
How can these symptoms be relieved? It is not enough to just fix the varicose and spider veins. Even if the existing varicose veins are removed, more collected blood will, over time, force the formation of new varicose veins. The only solution, therefore, is to shut down the saphenous vein itself. When the larger vein is sealed, the blood stops trying to flow through it – instead, it re-routes to deeper, healthier veins, and goes efficiently to the heart from there. Since impure blood no longer collects in the leg, new varicose veins will not form again.
If you notice visible varicose veins or spider veins, or feel that you have symptoms of venous insufficiency, visit a vein specialist to diagnose and treat your vein condition!
