Overview of Varicose Vein Laser Surgery | According to Vein Doctor

Varicose veins can be described as large protruding blood vessels that appear in the form of a thick and knotted mass of ropes or like tree trunks. Varicose veins are caused by an underlying circulatory disorder known as venous insufficiency.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which your vein valves collapse, which causes blood to accumulate in your leg veins. This eventually leads to the accumulation of blood in your leg veins, which leads to vein dilation and the formation of varicose veins and spider veins, amongst other vein diseases.

You should generally avoid varicose vein surgery as a treatment because surgical procedures are risky and complicated. Thanks to modern medicine, varicose veins treatments are now minimally invasive, painless, and safe.

Varicose vein laser surgery, also known as endovenous laser treatment, is a minimally invasive procedure in which the vein doctor uses laser energy to collapse the underlying diseased vein and treat vein disease and varicose veins.

In this article, we will give you an overview of varicose vein laser surgery and some alternative minimally-invasive varicose veins treatments.

Endovenous Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins

As mentioned previously, endovenous laser treatment is one of the best minimally invasive varicose veins treatments. This is a procedure in which the vein doctor uses the heat from a laser to reduce the appearance of varicose veins, thus rerouting the accumulated blood to healthier veins.

Preparation for Endovenous Laser Treatment

The following are the steps involved in the preparation for endovenous laser treatment:

  • Your vein doctor will examine your symptoms, discuss your goals, and run a diagnostic test called duplex ultrasound to identify the underlying vein disease.
  • The vein doctor will discuss your health history. If you have a history of deep vein thrombosis or other bleeding disorders, you should reveal that.
  • Disclose which medications you’re currently taking, especially if you’re on aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications.
  • Reveal all of your allergies.
  • If endovenous laser treatment is suitable, your vein doctor will discuss the procedure with you so you can mentally prepare yourself.
  • You may have to sign a consent form for the procedure.
  • Don’t eat or drink for about 8 hours before the procedure.
  • The vein doctor may administer a sedative to help you relax.
  • Make sure someone can drive you home after the procedure.

Endovenous Laser Procedure

The entire endovenous laser treatment is an in-office procedure and it doesn’t require hospitalization. The procedure generally concludes within an hour and you can resume your daily activities immediately after.

The following are the steps involved in the varicose vein laser surgery:

  • The vein doctor will numb a specific area in your thighs so they can create an incision.
  • The vein doctor will insert an endovenous laser through the incision under ultrasound guidance until it reaches the diseased saphenous vein.
  • Tumescent anesthesia will be injected along the length of the diseased saphenous vein. This is done to protect the surrounding tissues from damage.
  • The vein doctor will activate the catheter to generate laser energy that will disrupt the vein walls. The vein will collapse and the accumulated blood will reroute to healthier veins.
  • Regular blood circulation to the heart will resume.
  • The diseased vein will harden and eventually get absorbed by the body.

Endovenous Laser Treatment After Care

  • You must walk for about 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure. This is done to facilitate smooth blood circulation.
  • You must have someone else drive you home.
  • Place an ice pack to reduce the swelling.
  • Keep the incision site out of water for two days.
  • Wear compression stockings for approximately one week.
  • Keep your legs elevated while sitting.
  • Walk regularly and stay active but don’t run or lift anything heavy for about two weeks.
  • Call you vein doctor if you see signs of infection like redness, fluids leaking, or if you notice new swellings.

Advantages of Endovenous Laser Treatment

  • Minimally invasive and non-surgical.
  • Minimal pain or discomfort experienced.
  • High success rate of 97%.
  • Negligible risk of side effects and complications.
  • No hospitalization is necessary.
  • Concludes within an hour.
  • No downtime.

Risks or Side Effects of Endovenous Laser Treatment

The following are some of the potential side effects of endovenous laser treatment:

  • Mild pain or soreness over the vein.
  • Bleeding.
  • Bruising.
  • Redness or swelling.
  • Changes in skin color.
  • Burns.

In extremely rare circumstances, you may also experience complications like infection, nerve damage, or deep vein thrombosis. But the risk of these complications is negligible.

Best Varicose Veins Treatments

Endovenous laser treatment is one of the most effective varicose veins treatments but it causes more post-procedural pain and discomfort than other minimally invasive treatments. The following are some of the other ideal varicose veins treatments.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure in which the vein doctor channels heat energy through a catheter to collapse the diseased vein and restore blood circulation to the heart.

VenaSeal

VenaSeal is a procedure in which the vein doctor injects a vein glue of medical adhesive into the diseased saphenous vein. This vein glue seals the vein walls, thus essentially shutting it down so the accumulated blood may reroute to healthier veins and restore blood circulation.
