What does varicose vein treatment therapy involve? A top vein doctor offers some insight.

If you have decided that your varicose veins need medical attention, you may be apprehensive about what actually happens during varicose vein treatment therapy. Read on to learn more about what the process actually involves, and what are the best kinds of treatment available.

What are the types of varicose veins treatment therapy?

The main aim of varicose vein treatment therapy is to remove the unhealthy varicose vein from the body. This can be achieved through two kinds of treatment procedures:

Minimally invasive vein treatment

As the name suggests, these procedures cause minimum discomfort to the body, and are the preferred methods of treatment by most reputed vein clinics. They are simple procedures which can be completed in under an hour, and they require very little recovery time – you can get it done during your lunch break and get back to work!

In this kind of treatment, the vein is not ‘physically’ removed from the body. Instead, the diseased vein is sealed off so that blood can no longer flow through it. Once this happens, the blood re-routes automatically, and finds its way back to the heart through other, healthier veins. Since the diseased vein is no longer functional, it shrivels up over time and eventually gets digested by the body’s own enzymes. The entire process takes about a month. Some of the best minimally invasive treatment options are:

  • VenaSeal: Medicated glue is injected into the vein to block it up
  • Radiofrequency ablation: Vein is sealed off using heat delivered from a radiofrequency catheter
  • Endovenous laser ablation: Same as RFA, but uses a laser fiber as heat source.
  • ClariVein: Medicated solution is dispersed throughout the vein using a tiny implanted catheter. The solution makes the walls of the vein swell and stick together.
  • Varithena: Medicated foam is injected into the vein, which spreads over the vein walls, making them melt and fuse together.

Surgical treatment

Surgery can physically remove the diseased vein from your body. This is invasive, requires deeper anesthesia and requires a lot more time to recover from. Surgical treatment includes ambulatory phlebectomy (exposing and removing the vein), or vein ligation and stripping (A method that involves tying off the vein to seal it, and thendrawing the diseased vein out of the body). Both procedures require multiple skin incisions and can be quite painful.

While these techniques were quite popular in the past, they have been mostly replaced by minimally invasive treatment, which have been proven equally effective, and are infinitely more comfortable than surgical procedures. Most advanced vein clinics offer only minimally invasive treatment because of its obvious advantages.

Why do I need varicose veins treatment therapy?

Varicose veins aren’t just cosmetic disasters – they can be a sign of a serious vein disease called chronic venous insufficiency. This is a condition where the main veins of your legs, called the saphenous veins, fail to transport blood back to the heart efficiently. As a result, excess blood pools in your leg veins, causing them to expand. Over time, you will develop symptoms such as swollen ankles, tired, aching feet and leg cramps due to the excess fluid buildup in your legs. Treating varicose veins will ensure that blood drains back propery to the heart, and you should not only look better, but also feel great!

What happens if I leave my varicose veins untreated?

Even if don’t have symptoms initially, they can develop rapidly over time, and become worse the longer varicose veins are left untreated. Besides this the excess fluid in the legs can expand and thin out the leg kin, making it vulnerable to injury. Any wound on the leg may take ages to heal, and can turn into long standing ulcers. A direct injury to the varicose vein can also result in profuse bleeding that could require immediate medical attention.

Stagnant blood is always prone to clot, and clots can develop in the diseased veins. If these clots break off, they can travel through the body and block certain vital blood vessels, which can have disastrous health consequences. To avoid all these complications, it is best that you get your varicose veins treated early on.
