Vein Center in TX: Vein Diseases & Vein Treatments FAQs

August 29, 2020

spider and varicose vein treatment center

Our vein center in TX answers frequently asked questions about vein conditions, vein diseases, and vein treatments.

Vein Treatment Clinic is a vein center in TX with a perfect track record of treating spider veins, varicose veins, and other vein conditions. We carefully diagnose the root cause of your vein conditions to recommend the ideal minimally invasive treatment options for your specific needs. However, we’ve come to realize that most people either don’t know much about spider veins or have terrible misconceptions because of online articles peddling misinformation. This article aims to break down some of the common myths associated with spider veins and answer some frequently asked questions about vein conditions and spider vein treatments.

Q1: Do spider veins go away on their own?

Spider veins are dense clusters of blood vessels that appear on your skin’s surface, looking like spider webs or the thin legs of spiders. Most people don’t consult vein clinics about spider veins because they assume they’ll go away on their own. But that’s not true — spider veins don’t go away on this own, and instead, continue growing outwards. Spider veins occur due to blood accumulation in your leg veins, so they continue expanding and spreading until you consult a doctor for spider vein treatments.

Q2: Can I treat spider veins with home remedies or topical creams?

One of the most pervasive and dangerous myths about spider veins is that they can be treated with home remedies or topical creams. You’ll find many over-the-counter creams that promise they can treat spider veins — they’re all useless. Online sources also claim you can treat spider veins with apple cider vinegar or witch hazel — there’s no scientific evidence for these remedies.

Do you have questions about spider veins, varicose veins, and vein diseases? Our vein center in TX answers common FAQs about spider vein treatments.

Having said that, vein doctors often recommend a few lifestyle changes to prevent spider veins from spreading further or minimize the symptoms from worsening. Spider veins occur due to blood accumulation in your leg veins, so you can do a few things to facilitate smooth blood circulation in your legs, such as wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs while sitting, and doing calf-based exercises, like running, swimming, and yoga.

Q3: What’s vein disease?

Vein disease, also called chronic venous insufficiency, is the root cause of most vein conditions, including spider veins and varicose veins. Healthy veins have controlling components called vein valves that act as one-way doors, i.e., they allow blood to flow towards the heart but prevent it from flowing backward. Vein disease is a circulatory disorder in which your vein valves collapse, and blood flows backward due to gravity, eventually pooling in your leg veins. Continuous blood accumulation in your leg veins eventually leads to vein problems.

Q4: What are the vein conditions caused by vein diseases?

Vein disease is a chronic condition, which means it progressively worsens over time. The initial signs and symptoms of vein disease are so mild and benign that they’re often misattributed to aging or exhaustion. Initially, vein disease leads to restless leg syndrome, leg heaviness, leg swelling, frequent leg cramps, spider veins, throbbing leg veins, etc. These vein conditions usually worsen at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting or standing in one place.

If left untreated, vein diseases worsen and eventually lead to severe complications. Over time, you may experience advanced vein conditions, such as varicose veins, profuse bleeding due to burst varicose veins, skin disease, skin discoloration, leg ulcers due to poor blood circulation, and deep vein thrombosis due to the clotting of accumulated blood in your leg veins. If the blood clots inside your leg veins break away, they may also travel to your lungs, leading to a potentially fatal condition called pulmonary embolism.

Q5: How do you diagnose the root cause of spider veins?

During your initial consultation, vein doctors diagnose the root cause of spider veins using vascular imaging tests. Duplex Ultrasound is one of the most effective vascular imaging tests, giving the vein doctor a visual representation of the blood flow in your leg veins, revealing the diseased saphenous vein.

Q6: What are the best minimally invasive spider vein treatments?

Sclerotherapy is widely considered the most effective spider vein treatment, especially because it has been used to treat spider veins for decades. During the sclerotherapy procedure, the vein doctor injects a medicine called sclerosant into the spider veins. Sclerosant fuses the spider veins’ walls, turning them into hardened scar tissues that eventually get absorbed by the body, fading away from your skin’s surface.

However, sclerotherapy only works as a spider vein treatment if you don’t have underlying venous insufficiency. Sclerotherapy removes the visible spider veins but doesn’t address underlying vein disease. As such, if you have venous insufficiency, our vein doctor will first recommend radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or VenaSeal, i.e., vein treatments that collapse or seal the diseased saphenous vein responsible for the spider veins.

Q7: Are minimally invasive spider vein treatments covered by insurance plans?

Minimally invasive spider vein treatments are only covered by insurance plans if they’re medically necessary. As such, your insurance plans can cover radiofrequency ablation or endovenous laser ablation because they treat the underlying vein disease. But sclerotherapy spider vein treatment is a cosmetic procedure, so it’s not covered by insurance plans.
