spider and varicose vein treatment center

Before you get varicose veins treatment in Manhattan: check if you have chronic venous insufficiency.

If you have varicose veins or spider veins, the first thing any vein doctor would advise would be to get screened for a vein condition called chronic venous insufficiency at the vein center. Why is this important? Because CVS is the most common reason varicose veins and spider veins develop in the first place. Unfortunately, many individuals may not be aware that they have this vein condition.

What is chronic venous insufficiency?

This is a disease that affects large, superficial veins of your legs, the saphenous veins, which extend from your lower leg all the way up to your thigh. Normally, these veins drain the impure blood out from the legs, and sends it up to the heart – a tough job, because the blood literally need to defy gravity to move upwards. To help with this, the saphenous veins have tiny, one-way doors called valves in them. Once blood is pushed upwards, these valves close and form a tight seal, preventing blood from tricking down again into the legs.

In CVS, however, these valves become weak and do not shut tightly enough. This causes blood to accumulate in the veins of the lower leg. These veins expand under pressure, and bulge outwards, and become distorted. This is what you see on the surface as varicose veins. Smaller veins beneath the skin may become damaged and take on a purplish appearance beneath the skin – these are spider veins.

How would you know if you have chronic venous insufficiency?

When you get CVS, you develop certain characteristic symptoms, which you may not actually connect with your varicose veins. Some of these include:

  • Aching, heavy feet at the end of a long day
  • Swollen ankles after you sit or stand for long periods
  • Throbbing pain that runs all along the length of your leg
  • Sudden leg cramps

If you develop any of these symptoms, be sure to report it to your vein specialist! Your vein specialist will then run a simple, non-invasive investigation called the duplex ultrasound. This will allow the vein physician to view the pattern of blood flow in the veins, and whether any blood appears to be moving in the wrong direction.

Varicose veins treatment NYC: Does the treatment plan change if you have chronic venous insufficiency?

Yes, your vein treatment does depend on whether or not you have CVS! You see, if you just opt for varicose vein removal, the defective saphenous vein still remains, which will continue to send more blood into your legs, and force the formation of new varicose veins. Also, even of you do not have any painful symptoms, they will appear – and get progressively worse over time. To avoid this, you need to get to the root of the problem, which means addressing the saphenous vein.

So, when you have CVS, the vein doctor will not immediately treat your visible varicose veins and spider veins. Instead, he or she will perform a small, minimally invasive treatment procedure in the region of your thigh, which is where the saphenous vein is present. Tis procedure usually seals off the entire vein, so that blood can no longer flow through it at all. The blood is then forced to find its way to the heart through deeper, healthier veins, that do their job properly. So, the excess blood will drain off and your symptoms will subside. If you do have visible varicose veins or spider veins after this, they will be addressed separately.

Be aware: If you are getting varicose vein and spider vein treatment in NYC, the presence of CVS may impact your insurance coverage!

By themselves, varicose veins and spider veins may be considered a cosmetic’ problem, ad your insurance may not cover treatment. However, chronic venous insufficiency is considered an actual disease, as it can cause serious health issues and affect the quality of your life. So, this would make your vein treatment eligible for insurance coverage! You will need to provide proof of the condition, though, such as the vein doctor’s ultrasound report.
