How to find the best doctor for varicose veins: A top medical clinic offers advice.

A phlebologist is the best doctor for varicose veins

You might think that any doctor is capable of treating varicose veins. While this is technically true, your chances of successful outcomes increase exponentially if you see an expert. Phlebologists, or ‘vein doctors’ are specialists who have received special training in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease.Phlebologists have varied backgrounds – they may be vascular surgeons, anesthetists or internal medicine specialists, but they do have specific credentials in the diagnosis and treatment of vein diseases, particularly varicose and spider veins. Therefore, they are more likely to spot abnormal veins, and can offer more advanced treatment that would bring better results.

Do you really need an advanced specialist for those small veins? Yes! Read on to know why…

The right doctor for varicose veins always evaluates for underlying vein disease

Varicose veins aren’t just tiny bulges that need to be removed for the sake of cosmesis – they can reflect serious underlying vein disease in the parent veins. The parent veins (called the saphenous veins) usually transport impure blood from the smaller veins, including your bulging varicose vein, back to the heart. Since the blood has to travel a long distance, against gravity, there are tiny one-way valves at the top of the saphenous veins that assist with the process.  Once the blood flows past, the valves close and prevent the blood from falling back into the leg.

If you have vein disease, these valves become defective, and blood begins to accumulate in the leg veins. This causes the vein walls to expand under pressure, and the excess blood forces its way into smaller veins, causing them to bulge outwards as varicose veins. Sometimes, tiny new veins form, called spider veins, which are visible as blemishes under the surface of the skin.

Vein disease, also called chronic venous insufficiency, can cause throbbing pain in your legs, and swelling of the ankles and feet. The symptoms worsen after standing or sitting for long periods of time, and you may feel heaviness especially at night. Over time, the pain and general fatigue can deteriorate your quality of life. So it is important that you get such a condition diagnosed by an expert right away, and avail the right kind of treatment.

Varicose veins are more than just unsightly bulges on your legs – they can be painful and impact your quality of life. Our experts tell you how to choose the best doctor for varicose veins, and why you need them.

A skilled doctor for varicose veins will always offer minimally invasive vein treatment

There are two ways to get rid of varicose veins. The traditional method, called vein stripping, removes the vein in its entirety. It involves invasive surgery, and requires ample recovery time. However, modern vein specialists prefer minimally invasive procedures that seal off the veins and block blood flow, rather than removing them entirely. These outpatient procedures are quick – they take less than an hour, they are comfortable and do not require any down time. The minimally invasive procedures, however, may not be performed at all centers. You would want to choose a vein doctor that favors these minimally invasive procedures over traditional ones. These minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins include:

  • VenaSeal: This is the most minimally invasive technique available. This involves only a single injection, through which medicated glue is delivered into the vein. The glue causes the vein walls to stick together, and stops blood from flowing through the vein. Over time, the non-functional vein is absorbed by the body.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: This is similar to laser ablation, but a lot more comfortable. The skin over the defective vein is numbed, and a small incision is made to reach the vein. A small radiofrequency catheter is then inserted into the vein. Heat delivered through the catheter destroys the vein. the same procedure can be done using laser treatment instead of radiofrequency, but it is not as comfortable.
  • Sclerotherapy: A medicated solution, called sclerosant, is injected into the veins. The sclerosant irritates the vein walls and makes them stick together, cutting off blow flow in the vein. This acts on a limited area, so can only be used for smaller veins, like residual spider veins.
  • Varithena: This can be employed in medium sized veins. Instead of liquid sclerosant, medicated foam is injected. Foam tends to disperse over a slightly larger area.
  • Clarivein: An advanced technique that allows sclerosant to be used in larger veins. The sclerosant is delivered through a tiny catheter, implanted in your vein. The catheter rotates and disperses the solution throughout the vein.
