Spider vein Treatment in NYC: What, exactly, are spider veins?

Before you learn about spider vein treatment, it is imperative that you know exactly what spider veins are – so you won’t be seeking treatment for the wrong condition! So, what are spider veins?

Spider veins are tiny veins that become visible beneath the surface of your skin. They may be red, blue or purple in appearance. These veins occur in dense clusters, that appear to fan out from a single central point (and hence the name, spider veins!). These veins are usually located on your legs, with one common area being the inside of the ankle. They can also occur on the face. While the spider veins themselves do not cause any pain, you may experience itching or burning of the skin that lies over these veins.

Occasionally, you may experience other symptoms, such as leg cramps, swollen ankles, or restless or fatigued legs. These indicate that you may have other vein problems apart from our spider veins. You will need to visit a reputed vein treatment clinic to get this evaluated.

Spider vein treatment in NYC: Why do you need treatment from top rated vein doctors?

Only an experienced vein doctor can detect the underlying cause

It stands to reason – when you fix a problem, you need to simultaneously fix what is causing the problem, or it will just recur again. The same is true for spider veins. So what causes spider veins?

Spider veins mostly arise from a vein disease called chronic venous insufficiency. This is a disease where the main veins of the leg malfunction. As a result, blood that is supposed to go back to your heart instead pools in the legs, increasing the pressure in the leg veins. The hig pressure causes new, tiny veins to form under the skin surface, which are essentially your spider veins. So if you fix only the spider veins, it is kind of like trying to remove water stains from a wall without fixing the leaky pipe.

A good doctor will be able to assess whether or not you have chronic venous insufficiency, and offer you treatment for that if you need it. A good vein doctor would never just fix your spider veins and leave it at that.

Not all vein centers offer the most recommended treatment

All reputed vein specialists would agree that there is only one permanent fix for spider vein removal – sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a medicated solution (called sclerosant) is injected directly into your spider veins. The sclerosant has an irritant action, and this causes the walls of the veins to swell up, stick to each other, and seal the vein off completely from blood flow. The vein shrivels up and eventually disappears permanently. Usually, a single session of scleortherapy can give you effective results.

Some vein treatment centers offer laser treatment as an alternative to sclerotherapy, usually because it need not be done by a trained specialist. This just involves shining a laser light onto the skin over the spider veins. The heat from the laser light causes the veins to shrink and fade. However, you will need at least three to four sessions at a laser vein removal center to achieve the same results that you can with one round of sclerotherapy.  While some might feel that shining a light may be more comfortable than getting stuck with a needle, that may not be the case. Sclerotherapy needles are really, really tiny, so you can barely feel the prick. However, the heat from the laser light can actually cause a burning sensation.

Getting treated at advanced vein centers may allow you to get insurance benefits

Getting only spider vein treatment may not be covered by insurance, as this treatment is purely cosmetic. However, your vein doctor should screen you for chronic venous insufficiency. If the ultrasound indicates that you have this condition, insurance will usually cover treatment for the same. Sclerotherapy is usually done after treatment for chronic venous insufficiency, and may be added to the insurance package, depending on your carrier. Talk to the office staff at your vein care center for any clarifications.
