What to Expect When I Visit a Vein Clinic for Varicose Vein Treatment in San Diego? Insights from a Top Medical Center.

spider and varicose vein treatment center

You will have an initial consultation with a vein specialist

When you make an appointment to visit a vein clinic, you will immediately be seen by a varicose vein specialist. The vein doctor will ask you about your health concerns and medical history, before going on to examine your varicose veins in detail.

At the Vein Treatment Clinic, you can benefit from the expertise of two highly-skilled, double board-certified vein doctors.

  • Dr. Billy Schoenfeld: Harvard trained, Dr. Schoenfeld’s expertise is matched with years of experience.
  • Dr. Jasmine Koo: Dr. Koo has advanced training in managing patients with vein diseases.

Both our vein doctors are kind and approachable and believe in patient-centered care. While they will ask you all the right questions, they are also there to address any queries or concerns that you might have about your varicose veins!

Your vein doctor may ask you to have an ultrasound test

Varicose veins usually appear because the blood flow in your larger veins is defective. If you have had specific symptoms such as leg pain, or foot and ankle swelling, your vein doctor may suggest that you have an ultrasound. This is a simple, non-invasive imaging technique that allows the vein doctor to look at the pattern of blood flow in your leg veins. The ultrasound allows vein specialists to identify the primary vein causing all your problems. In most cases, this is the saphenous vein. Vein doctors usually target this vein for initial treatment, before going on to address the more visible varicose veins and spider veins. Addressing the primary vein causing all the trouble will help avoid recurrences in the future.

If you have varicose veins, you may be apprehensive about getting them treated. Let us walk you through the entire process so you will know what to expect when you get varicose vein treatment in SD.

You will be offered a customized treatment plan outlining the procedures that you require

Based on your medical examination and ultrasound, our vein doctors will put together a customized treatment plan just for you. At VTC, we do not believe in the ‘one size fits all’ approach – your treatment strategy will be unique, and will be based on several factors, including:

  • Your age and medical history
  • The number and size of veins that have a defective blood flow pattern
  • Your specific concerns, comfort level  and fears
  • Your treatment expectations – whether you are primarily looking for pain relief, or cosmetic results, for instance.

However, all these treatment plans do have one thing in common – they all involve minimally invasive vein procedures. With these procedures, the veins are accessed through a single puncture hole in your skin – almost like an injection, and the treatment is carried out from within the vein. This helps avoid unnecessary invasive surgery, which would require hospital admissions, advanced anesthesia, and a long period of recovery.

You can verify your insurance coverage during, or even prior to your first appointment

This is one concern that several patients have. We get it – vein treatment can be extremely expensive, and you would obviously want to know whether your insurance plan will cover treatment costs. At the front desk of most vein clinics, the staff would be able to verify coverage against your plan. At the Vein Treatment Clinic, we even provide this information to you prior to your first appointment! All you need to do is call the front desk and provide your details – they will do the rest, at no charge to you.

What to expect on the day of treatment and the aftermath

The entire treatment process is an outpatient procedure, and takes less than an hour. After your initial consultation, you only need to show up on the day of your procedure, about half an hour before your scheduled time. Once the procedure is complete, you can leave almost immediately! Minimally invasive vein treatment does not require any downtime – you can get back to your regular routine almost immediately. Some of our clients even fit the procedure into their lunch break!

You may have some amount of pain, swelling and bruising following the procedure – your vein doctor will give you some prescription painkillers to make this better. For a couple of weeks after the procedure, you may need to wear prescription compression stockings. This will help the treated veins stay sealed shut, and it also reduces swelling. You will also need to walk regularly after the procedure – this leads to more effective outcomes.
