Is vein removal in NYC the best option for varicose and spider veins? A top vein doctor offers some insight.

spider and varicose vein treatment center

Everyone who has varicose veins talks of ‘getting their veins removed’. If you also have vein conditions, you may feel that this is your best course of treatment – after all, it is permanent, because it gets rid of the vein in question. However, this may not be completely true! Read on to learn more.

Vein removal in NYC: Is this the best option offered by vein clinics?

What exactly is vein removal? It is a surgical procedure, and goes by many other names, such as vein stripping, or ambulatory phlebectomy. Most modern vein clinics do not offer this procedure anymore. In this procedure, incisions are made at two ends – the top and bottom of your defective vein. The vein is tied off at one end, literally ‘stripped’ from the underlying tissue, and drawn out through the other end. Does not sound very pleasant, does it? It is not exactly comfortable, and you may need to have general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia for the procedure.

Since you need advanced anesthesia options, you will end up needing a lot of laboratory investigations, and may even require hospital admission. After a surgical vein removal, you also need to plan for a long recovery time – it will be at least two to three weeks before you can return to your normal activities.

What is a better alternative for varicose veins treatment in Manhattan?

To avoid the problems associated with surgical vein removal, vein doctors came up with a solution – minimally invasive vein treatment. This does not need advanced anesthesia – it can be done using a simple numbing injection – so you won’t really need additional laboratory investigations. Minimally invasive procedures can be done in less than an hour, right in the vein clinic. These procedures do not need any recovery time, and you can even go straight to work afterwards!

Varicose veins and spider veins can look unpleasant and feel awful. But is removing them completely the best solution? Learn about the best treatment options for your vein conditions.

But what are minimally invasive procedures, exactly? These are procedures in which the vein is treated from within. The vein doctor visualizes the vein underneath the skin using an ultrasound. Under imaging guidance, the vein doctor inserts a flexible tube, called a catheter, into the defective vein. Depending on the exact kind of procedure, the catheter is used to deliver either heat, a medicated solution, or medical grade glue into the vein. All these substances serve one common purpose – they block up the vein from within. Once blood can no longer flow through the vein, the vein shrivels up, and will eventually disappear.

Varicose vein treatment in NYC: What are the best minimally invasive treatment options?

Based on the method used to seal off the veins from within, there are different kinds of minimally invasive procedures. All of them are equally effective; however, some procedures can be more comfortable to undergo than others.

  • VenaSeal: This is considered the most painless procedure – it does not even need a numbing injection! Medical grade glue is used to seal the veins, and this results in less swelling and bruising as compared to other methods.
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): This uses heat to seal off veins from within, and is the most commonly used procedure.
  • Endovenous laser vein ablation (EVLA): This also uses heat, which comes from a laser source, and not from radiofrequency waves. It is slightly more painful than RFA, because laser energy generated higher temperatures and can be more intense. Both RFA and EVLA need numbing injections.
  • ClariVein:  This uses a medicated solution called sclerosant to seal the vein. In this technique, the catheter has a rotating head, which helps disperse the sclerosant evenly throughout the vein. It does not need a numbing injection.

What about spider veins? What is the best spider vein treatment in NYC?

Most vein doctors agree – sclerotherapy is the most effective treatment option for spider veins on thighs and legs. Sclerotherapy involves a direct injection of sclerosant into the tiny veins – no image guidance is needed here, as the veins lie just beneath the skin, and can easily be seen and accessed. Some vein doctors prefer laser treatment for spider veins if the veins are located in a delicate area, such as the face.
