Which Varicose Vein Treatment Is the Best for You?

If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, or the unsightly appearance of bulging veins, you’re not alone. Varicose veins affect millions of people worldwide, and they often bring along discomfort and frustration. You might feel heaviness in your legs, experience throbbing or aching pain, or notice that the veins are becoming increasingly visible, making you want to avoid wearing certain clothes. In such cases, varicose vein treatment becomes essential to improve both the physical and aesthetic aspects of your legs.

At Vein Treatment Clinic, we specialize in effective, minimally invasive vein treatments for varicose and spider veins. We begin with a detailed diagnosis using duplex ultrasound to identify the underlying causes of your veins’ condition. Based on the diagnosis, we curate a tailored treatment plan to help you take the first step toward relief and clearer, healthier legs.

What is the Best Varicose Vein Treatment?

There is no single “best” treatment for varicose veins that works for everyone. The most effective treatment depends on various factors such as the size and location of the varicose veins, the presence of spider veins, your overall health, and the severity of your condition. At Vein Treatment Clinic, we conduct thorough diagnostic tests, including duplex ultrasound, to understand the root cause of your varicose veins. This enables our experienced, Ivy League-educated vein doctors to create a personalized vein treatment plan.

Your vein treatment plan may involve one or a combination of minimally invasive vein treatments. After a complete assessment, we’ll recommend the best options based on your unique needs, providing you with the relief you deserve.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. A vein specialist injects a special solution directly into the vein during this procedure. This solution irritates the vein lining, causing the vein to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body. The outpatient procedure takes about 30 minutes and doesn’t require anesthesia. Sclerotherapy is most effective for smaller veins and is minimally invasive, making it an excellent option for those with spider veins or veins that aren’t causing significant discomfort.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive procedure for more prominent varicose veins and underlying venous insufficiency. This treatment uses laser energy to target the affected vein. A small catheter is inserted into the vein, and a laser fiber is passed through it. The laser energy heats the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. As the body absorbs the treated vein over time, blood flow is redirected to healthier veins. EVLA is typically performed under local anesthesia and can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is another effective treatment for varicose veins and underlying chronic venous insufficiency, similar to EVLA but using radiofrequency energy instead of laser. A catheter is inserted into the vein, and radiofrequency energy is used to heat the walls, causing them to collapse and close off the vein. The accumulated blood reroutes to healthier leg veins. This treatment is highly effective for patients dealing with large varicose veins.

VenaSeal

VenaSeal is a newer treatment that uses a medical adhesive to close off affected veins. During the procedure, a vein doctor inserts a catheter into the vein, and a special adhesive is delivered to seal the vein. The vein then becomes scar tissue and is absorbed by the body over time. VenaSeal is unique because it doesn’t require heat, making it ideal for patients who may not be candidates for other vein treatments like laser or radiofrequency ablation.

ClariVein

ClariVein combines mechanical and chemical processes to treat varicose veins. A catheter is inserted into the vein and rotated to break up the vein’s lining mechanically. At the same time, a sclerosant medication is injected, which causes the vein to collapse and close off. This two-step approach is highly effective in treating both large and small varicose veins. ClariVein is a fast procedure that typically takes less than an hour and doesn’t require heat. It’s also minimally invasive and offers quick recovery times with minimal discomfort.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a procedure used to remove surface varicose veins that are bulging and prominent. A vein doctor makes tiny incisions in the skin and removes the veins through these openings using specialized tools. While this procedure is not typically used for deep veins, it is highly effective for treating visible, surface-level varicose veins. This treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is often done with other vein treatments like EVLA or RFA.
