What conditions can my Vein Doctor in Long Island treat? A reputed medical center lists the top 5 vein problems.

spider and varicose vein treatment center

1. Your vein doctor in Long Island treats Varicose veins

This is the most common reason why you would visit a vein treatment center. Varicose veins are veins hat bulge out from underneath your skin, and are usually dark purple, green or blue in color. One in three Americans suffer from varicose veins.

Normal veins also sometimes bulge out from your skin as you get older – you can usually see these on the back of your hands. How do you distinguish healthy veins from varicose veins? While normal veins run a relatively straight course, varicose veins follow a twisted path, and usually look like knotted ropes.  You may notice them on your legs and inner thighs, but they can also occur on your buttocks, and the lower hip region. Swollen varicose veins can be painful, and can profusely bleed if you injure them.

Varicose veins are usually treated through minimally invasive procedures, which help the vein seal off and heal from within. You don’t need to wait – our vein clinic in Long Island follows the highest standards for hygiene to remain safe in the time of COVID-19.

We offer the latest technologies to treat vein disease in 2020.

2. Your vein doctor can get rid of Spider veins

Spider veins are thin, wispy veins that appear as bluish or purplish, interlacing streaks. They are very tiny – usually less than a millimeter in diameter, and are usually found on your legs, especially on the inner side of your ankle. They can also occur on the face, particularly around the nose. Spider veins are not usually painful, but can be annoying because of their unsightly appearance.

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice to fix spider veins on your legs. Some vein specialists may prefer laser therapy if the spider veins are located in delicate areas – such as your face.

3. Your vein doctor will also address deeper vein issues like venous insufficiency

When you visit a vein clinic for varicose veins or spider veins, the vein doctor usually checks you out for a condition called venous insufficiency. This is because venous insufficiency is what usually causes varicose veins and spider veins in the first place. Venous insufficiency is a condition that affects the main veins of the leg, called saphenous veins. These veins have a tough job, because they need to move blood upwards to the heart, against gravity. One-way doors, called valves, are present within these veins to assist with the process. In venous insufficiency, the valves malfunction, and this allows blood to trickle back down into the legs. Over time, the excess accumulated blood in the legs increases pressure not only in the main vein, but also in the smaller veins, causing them to bulge out (as varicose veins), or get damaged (as spider veins).

4. Your vein specialist may be able to diagnose restless legs syndrome

As the name suggests, this is a condition in which you have an uncontrollable urge to move your legs. This urge is often because of an uncontrollable sensation, such as tingling, itching or burning, which seems to go away only if you move your legs. They usually occur after you have been sitting or lying down for an extended period of time. These sensations are uncomfortable enough to interfere with daily activities, and can even disrupt sleep.

While there are several causes for restless legs syndrome, chronic venous insufficiency is the most common cause. So, if you have this condition, you should probably visit a vein center. Your vein physician will be able to diagnose the underlying cause and offer you appropriate treatment accordingly.

5. Your vein doctor can help you manage leg cramps

‘Cramps’ are usually sustained muscle contractions, or spasms. When you get a cramp, the muscle feels ‘hard’, and you won’t be able to use it to move your leg until the cramp subsides. Many of us have experienced cramps at some time or the other. Occasional cramping of the legs is usually harmless, but if you develop frequent cramps, you ill need to look for what is causing it and correct the cause.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a common cause of muscle cramps in adults. The excess blood in your legs can break down into compounds that trigger muscle cramps. When you visit a vein center, your vein doctor can use an ultrasound device to look at the flow of blood in your veins, and determine if this is what is causing your leg cramps.
